Communities worldwide are struggling with housing uncertainty and affordability, and those hosting higher education institutions navigate these identical challenges within their unique contexts. To better understand the needs and challenges of stakeholders at higher education institutions and in their host communities, the International Town and Gown Association (ITGA) is partnering with the National League of Cities (NLC), along with other town-gown organizations from around the globe, on a housing survey. DLR Group, an active ITGA member with integrated firm planning and design leadership experience focused on improving housing access, is utilizing its global research expertise to provide survey support.
The goal of the survey is to gather input from institutional leaders and local officials about town-gown relationships in the context of housing. The data will be used to identify key variables in achieving affordable and attainable housing and highlight effective approaches, strategies, and tools for resolving institutional and community housing needs. Together, ITGA’s partners will use these insights to address foundational issues that hinder campus, community, and constituent well-being. Survey analysis and aggregated data will also be shared with those who complete the survey as a resource for coordinated and ongoing engagement between cities, institutions, and interested partners.
We want to hear from you regarding the issues facing your communities. Please look for the survey in your email and organizational websites in mid-January. Completing the survey will take approximately 20 minutes on the higher education version and five minutes on the local leader side. We also hope you consider passing it along to those in your network who may share your insights into accessible, affordable housing in higher education communities.
