As a college town, like many others, the leaders of Kent State University have always been looking for ways to expand partnership between the campus and the city. History shows that there are times when this is embraced, and others when there is a strain on the relationship. However that may be, back in 2013, the leadership struck (blue & ) gold.
The President of Kent State at the time was Lester Lefton and he had a vision, working with the city manager, Dave Ruller, to connect downtown and the university’s campus. Over 15 years ago, the city underwent major construction and totally revamped itself. The esplanade, named after Lefton, gives access to the students and staff of campus to come to the newer downtown and visit businesses, and even utilize downtown dining dollars. It also gives residents and visitors to Kent direct access to getting to Kent State’s campus.
We are excited for you all to come and experience Kent and to take a walk yourself on our beautiful esplanade!
This project got much attention, even being recognized by ITGA and given an inaugural award for representing the spirit of Town and Gown relations.
