2025 Pre-Conference Special Topic Workshop

Civil Unrest: Preparing and Responding to Modern Demonstrations
The Pre-Conference event on June 3rd, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, will focus on "Civil Unrest: Preparing and Responding to Modern Demonstrations," with a special emphasis on the tragic events of May 4th, 1970, at Kent State University. This workshop will provide an overview of that day, when four students were killed and nine others were wounded by the Ohio National Guard during protests against the Vietnam War. Over 50 years later, the lessons from this national tragedy continue to inform our approach to managing and responding to civil unrest.

Immersed in the timeline and those who had stories to tell, I personally felt a stronger connection to the day that would forever be commemorated in song and whisper. I am grateful to Alison Caplan for her time, her spirit and all that she shared. I am also thankful we had the opportunity to learn more about these events and encourage all to join in this riveting program. We have an incredible community with a rich history and many stories to tell. Some are inspiring, some are sad, but every story hits closer to your heart when you see it from an up-close perspective.”
